The President of the Republic of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, together with his delegation, visited on Wednesday late afternoon of 31st October 2018, the Maputo Thermal Power Plant, where he received explanations about how the facility operates as well as the status of the bilateral relations between the power utilities of Mozambique and Botswana.

Carlos Yum, Acting Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Adérito de Sousa, Market Operator Director, Narendra Gulab, Director of Generation, and Inácio Manuel were the EDM management representatives who provided relevant explanations to the Head of State of Botswana.

The President of Botswana is paying a 3-day state visit to Mozambique, during which he intends to reinforce the cooperation agreements between the two countries, the energy sector being one of the areas of common interest which Botswana intends to acquire 150 MW.

Meanwhile, according to the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Ernesto Max Tonela, who accompanied the President of Botswana during the visit, the current availability of energy in Mozambique does not allow to meet the needs of that country and as a result, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and the Botswana Power Corporation – the power utility of Botswana –are now finalising a contract to ensure the supply of only 70 MW, while they seek long term supply alternatives which may include the participation of entities from Botswana in energy projects in Moçambique.

Mozambique has been exporting energy to Botswana, based on annual contracts and at this moment a new contract is being negotiated to enter into force from the 1st January 2019.
